Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is one of the most common sleep disorders, next to insomnia.  OSA consists of episodes in which respiration ceases during sleep, stemming from the repeated collapse of the respiratory tube.  The most common cause of this is the partial or complete stoppage of air flow due to the relaxation of the muscles which surround the throat and tongue.

Symptoms:

  • Loud snoring
  • Morning headaches
  • Breathlessness or difficulty breathing during sleep, gasping for breath
  • Pauses in respiration during sleep
  • Daytime drowsiness
  • Inability to stay alert, focused during daytime
  • Frequent desire to urinate during the night
  • Depression, lethargy, loss of memory, irritability, anxiety

Most likely to suffer from OSA:

  • Men more than women
  • Older people
  • Overweight and obese people
  • People with high blood pressure
  • People with very wide necks
  • People who smoke

Untreated OSA can lead to:

  • High blood pressure
  • Diabetes
  • Stroke
  • Heart attack
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Excessive daytime sleepiness
  • Depression
  • Weight gain

At Nevada Sleep Diagnostics, we know how important sleep is. We have been diagnosing sleep disorders for over 12 years. If you are having problems sleeping, talk with your doctor. You can also check out the sleep hygiene tips under the Sleep Disorders topic on our website.

Remember, sleeping wise, sleeping well is vital to your overall health. If you are always tired, Nevada Sleep Diagnostics can help!

Nevada Sleep Diagnostics would like you to be aware of the following:

Sleep is essential for good health, safety and optimum performance, while lack of sleep affects your mood and behavior and contributes to poor performance.  Many of America’s adults sleep poorly.  According to polls by the National Sleep Foundation (NSF), sleep problems are widespread and on the rise, but they are often ignored.  The general public doesn’t always consider the dangerous consequences that can result from lack of sleep.

If you are having trouble sleeping on a consistent basis see your doctor. Sleep disorders are medical conditions and can be treated.
