Snoring
Snoring can disrupt sleep and could mean sleep apnea.
Sleep apnea consists of episodes in which respiration ceases during sleep, stemming from the repeated collapse of the respiratory tube. The most common cause of this is the partial or complete stop-page of the flow of air due to the relaxation of the muscles which surround the throat and tongue. When the blockage of air is serious, awakenings could happen over 100 times a night.
Excessive sleepiness and lack of concentration will occur. Worse yet, it also increases blood pressure and risk of stroke.
Being overweight causes snoring. A man with a collar size over 16 ½ inches, will likely be a snorer. Male snoring is related to the amount of soft tissues around the neck (fatty tissue sags more and obstructs the airways). Alcohol also relaxes supporting muscles, increasing the risk of snoring.
Today, consider screening for sleep apnea and come in for a sleep study!
Snoring is one of the main reasons to consider an overnight sleep study. Take our free sleep apnea screening test to see if snoring is an indication of a more severe health issue.
safety in the workplace
Sleep Apnea screening for transportation, manufacturing and distribution workers of all types is encouraged. This includes those that operate and maintain the equipment.
Certainly the nature of air traffic controller shift work and truck drivers boring stretches of road affect alertness on the job. However a program to screen for sleep apnea and ensure CPAP compliance is extremely important in taking this medical condition out of the equation.
Snoring and sleep apnea can exacerbate medical conditions of hypertension and diabetes, and increase potential of heart disease and stroke. In addition to causing safety and productivity problems in the work place and on the highway.
Screening, testing and treating sleep apnea offers the rewards of a good, healthy and safe life both in the patients and those surrounding them.
